Tiger Woods and his 12-year-old son Charlie put on a show over the weekend at the PNC
Championship in Florida. Woods was making his return to competitive golf after a car accident in Florida left him with a shattered leg, and all eyes were on him to see how he would play.
After a first round 10-under 62 on Saturday left the pair in a tie for third , Tiger and Charlie ran off 11 straight birdies on Sunday from holes 7 to 17, briefly holding a share of the lead, -on their way to shooting 57 in the scramble format. Their two-round total of 25-under 119 saw them finish runner-up at the US$ 1.08 mn event in Orlando by two shots.
Woods used a cart in both rounds and it was clear that walking was difficult for him. Still, he hit a number of good shots throughout the weekend.
“The fact that I’m able to have this opportunity this year, even a couple weeks ago we didn’t really know whether or not I would be doing this, but here we are,” Wood told the media.
“And we had just the best time ever, and I just wish I could have walked down the fairways with him and been side by side with him the entire time like we were last year.”
The tournament was won by two-time Major champion John Daly and his 18-year-old son John Daly II, who is currently playing college golf at Arkansas and was a junior Rolex All-American. The pair posted a record score of at 27-under par with scores of 60-57 (117), two strokes ahead of Team Woods. The previous tournament record was 26-under set by Davis Love III/Dru Love in 2018.
The tournament was a two-person 36-hole competition that partners major champions
with a family member. Justin Thomas and Mike Thomas were the defending champions. They finished tied-3rd with scores of 60-60 alongside Stewart Cink and his son Reagan Cink. Other notable pairings in the field included Women’s World NO. 1 Nelly Korda and her father Petr Korda, the former Australian Open tennis champion, who finished in a tie for 12th, and Vijay Singh and his son Qass, who finished in a tie for 5th.
The Woods team made its debut last year and finished seventh in a 20-team field.
