Aditi Ashok has made 9 cuts in 13 starts this season

Aditi Ashok shot 76-71-72-74 (5-over 293) to finish in a tie for 40th at the US$ 9mn KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, the women’s third major of the year, played in Bethesda, Maryland. It was the ninth cut Aditi has made in 13 starts, with  two top-20 finishes this year.

The tournament was won by South Korea’s remarkable In Gee Chun, who shot 64-69-75-75 (5-under 283), to claim her 3rd major title.  Chun, who held a six-shot lead after 36 holes, and a three-shot lead after 54 holes, found herself two shots behind after the front nine on Sunday. But she kept her composure and benefitted from yet another late collapse by American Lexi Thompson to win by one shot and claim her third major title. Australia’s Minjee Lee birdied the 18th to finish in a tie with Thompson for second place at 4-under.

Chun, who has a genius level IQ and a short while ago contemplated quitting golf some month ago because of media pressure questioning why she hadn’t won for two years, has a remarkable story which we will bring to India Golf Weekly next week.

In a sign of the big money changes in professional golf, the KPMG Women’s PGA purse was doubled from US$4.5 to US$9.0 million this year, a staggering increase and welcome by the increasingly popular women’s game.

The LPGA Tour will now take a two week’s break before returning for the US$ 2.5mn Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational from July 13-16 in Midland, Michigan.
