42-year-old Sri Lankan veteran, N Thangaraja fired a final round 66 to come from 7 strokes behind to win the inaugural edition of the ₹1 crore Vizag Open at East Point Golf Club – a useful confidence booster for his Asian Games appearance in China next week for Sri Lanka.
With most of the top Indians, including all four Indians on the Asian Games team playing overseas, this victory also extended the streak of 11 different winners in 11 PGTI events this season – which means titles are within grasp of many more domestic tour players in the absence of the big stars.
Added Thangaraja “My special thanks to my friend and fellow professional C Muniyappa ( from Bangalore) for being my club-fitter. I got a new set of clubs before the second half of the season and got them fitted from Muniyappa in Bengaluru. He did a great job with my clubs which has in turn made a huge difference to my game.”
