Tournament host Tiger Woods’ return to tournament golf after 9 months was the highlight of the Hero World Challenge played in Albany, Bahamas, where it has been played since 2015. Tiger showed shades of greatness as he completed 72 holes with steady scores of 75-70-71-72 and amazed audiences with booming drives averaging over 300 yards – remarkable considering he had shattered his right leg in a near fatal car accident in February 2021.
The US$ 4.5mn tournament, sanctioned as a special event by the PGA Tour, features 20 of the world’s top ranked PGA Tour players including the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland and many other superstars in action.
27-year-old Scheffler, the 2022 Masters Champion who has had an incredible run in 2023 including winning The Players Championship shot a total score of 20-under par ( 69-66-65-68) to win the Hero Challenge for the first time after being 2nd two times earlier, partly owing to his not incurring a 3 putt over the entire 72 holes.
Two-time defending champion Viktor Hovland turned in a strong effort on Sunday that proved to be a little too late. He posted a Sunday-best 63 but started the round at even-par. The deficit proved too great to overcome in his quest for a three-peat.
Hovland shot rounds of 73-73-70-63 for a 10th place finish at 9-under 279.
