28-year-old Veer Ahlawat from Gurgaon stretched his lead at the top of the PGTI rankings, keeping in mind the No 1 at the end of the year automatically earns full playing rights on the DP World (European) Tour.
After his runner-up finish at the US$2.5 million Hero Indian Open, he added the Rs 15 lac winner’s cheque at the Rs 1 crore Delhi-NCR Open played last week at Noida Golf Course.
With the win, Ahlawat’s season total is over ₹86 lacs with 2nd placed Manu Gandas being at Rs 48 lacs.
Incidentally, Veer and Manu were locked in an intense battle for the NCR Cup title until the 72nd hole where Manu bogeyed to finish one stroke behind.
This week, the tour is in Gurgaon for the Gurgaon Open at Classic Golf & CC, the last tournament before the tour takes a long summer break and returns in August.
While there is still a lot of money at stake in the latter half of the PGTI season, it is likely that Veer will juggle his play on the Asian Tour such that he ensures he finishes No 1 and graduates to the European Tour next year.
