27-year-old Shubhankar Sharma achieved the long-awaited top 5 finish on the DP World (European) Tour finishing tied-5th at the US$3.25 million Italian Open. Sharma was in contention on Sunday but finished with a 73 after 68-68-67 in the previous 3 rounds, totaling 8-under 274. This impressive performance comes just in time as Sharma prepares for the (British) Open Championship to be played at Royal Troon in two weeks.
After showing great consistency this season with 12 cuts in 15 starts, it seemed victory was within Sharma’s grasp. However Sharma earned US$94,113 (₹84 lakhs) for his performance, moving him to 60th on the European Tour rankings – a big step in retaining his full playing rights for 2025. He is also nearing the €5 million career earnings milestone on the European Tour, being only €200,000 short as he plays his 8th consecutive season.

The DP World Tour now heads to Germany for the US$2.5 million BMW International Open from July 4-7, where LIV Golfer Martin Kaymer, being German, is playing on a country exemption, while other LIV stars Patrick Reed and Thomas Pieters have been officially invited to the event, signalling a change in attitude of the European Tour towards LIV players who had earlier been banned from playing the European Tour.
