Yuvraj Singh Sandhu, a 27-year-old rising star from Chandigarh, delivered an impressive performance at the US$1 million SJM Macao Open, securing a tied-13th finish with rounds of 71-67-64-68. Having earned his Asian Tour card this season via the Asian Development Tour (ADT), Sandhu’s strong showing this week earned him US$14,483 (approximately ₹12 lakh), and a crucial jump to 49th in the Asian Tour rankings. His position is vital as the top 60 players retain their tour cards for the following season. With seven events still to go, Sandhu’s focus will be on maintaining his momentum to secure his spot on the 2025 Asian Tour. Building on a strong recent streak, Sandhu’s commendable performance in Macau followed a tied 4th finish at the Mercuries Masters and a tied 6th at the Asian Development Tour earlier.
The tournament was dominated by Thai golfers, with Rattanon Wannasrichan leading the field with a wire-to-wire victory at 20-under par, edging out Gunn Charoenkul by two strokes. Thailand’s Poosit Supupramai secured third place, making it an all-Thai podium. This underscores the huge strides Thailand golf has made in the past decade compared to India, which has fallen further and further behind its neighbours in producing international quality players.
A total of 11 Indian professionals were at the US$1 million Asian Tour event in Macao, China last week trying to climb the year long Asian Tour rankings which for the first time in three decades sees no Indians in the top 40.
Other Indians who made the cut included – Asian Tour winner Ajeetesh Sandhu (T-29th), Saptak Talwar and former Asian Tour winner Khalin Joshi finished T-42nd and Indian golf legend S.S.P. Chawrasia finished T-50th, followed by Chikkarangappa S. at T-56th, were the only 6 Indians to survive the 36-hole cut.
Indians missing the cut were Karandeep Kochhar, Varun Chopra, Honey Baisoya, Rashid Khan and Yashas Chandra.
The Asian Tour is in Thailand this week for the US$ 2mn Black Mountain Championship from Oct. 17-20.
