Delhi GC poised to host $5 million DP World Tour event

The historic Delhi Golf Club (DGC) is reportedly in talks to host a $5 million DP World Tour event this year in October

After two years where Indian golf has seen only one international event each year (the Hero Indian Open), the Indian golf scene is abuzz with whispers of another new European (DP World) Tour event at the Delhi Golf Club (DGC) this October, rumoured to have a prize purse of $5 million. If the rumors hold true, this could create another huge opportunity for Indian players, who have a remarkable history of success at the Delhi Golf Club.

While the end of January was under the spotlight with the scheduled Asian Tour and LIV Golf-funded $2 million International Series – India, a much bigger story appears to be unfolding. Speculation is rife that the DP World Tour will return to India for the second time this year, following the March outing of the $2.25 million Hero Indian Open. If finalised, this $5 million event could become the richest golf tournament ever held in the country.

Although nothing is confirmed yet, the anticipation is palpable. Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) players have already started preparing for what could be a pathbreaking opportunity.

The DP World Tour structure
The 2025 DP World Tour schedule will see players competing for a record total prize fund of $153 million (excluding Majors) across three distinct phases:

  1. The Global Swings
The season kicks off with five unique swings—Opening, International, Asian, European, and Closing. Each swing features its own rankings, culminating in a ‘Swing Champion’ title for the leader, who automatically qualifies for the Back 9 events.

  2. The Back 9
Featuring nine historic tournaments and national Opens, the Back 9 is a critical phase offering increased Race to Dubai Rankings Points with eligibility being determined through a hybrid model.

  3. The DP World Tour Play-Offs
The season concludes with the Rolex Series events in Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The top 70 players from the Race to Dubai Rankings battle it out for a chance to be crowned the DP World Tour’s Number One player. Notably, the top 10 DP World Tour members on the 2025 Race to Dubai Rankings (not already exempt) will earn coveted PGA TOUR cards for 2026.

Could Delhi Host a ‘Back 9’ Event?
The speculation surrounding the rumored $5 million event aligns with the Back 9 schedule, which has one unconfirmed event in October. If the pieces fall into place, DGC could host this prestigious tournament, cementing India’s position as a global golf destination.

While the golf world eagerly awaits confirmation of this potential landmark event, immediate attention turns to two major tournaments at the DLF Golf and Country Club:

  • The Asian Tour and LIV Golf-funded International Series India ($2 million): Making its debut this February.
  • The Hero Indian Open ($2.25 million): A long-standing staple of Indian golf, scheduled for March.
