Tiger Woods with his late mother, Kultida Woods
Match 5 of the Tomorrow’s Golf League (TGL) began on a somber note with a moment of silence honouring 15-time Major Champion Tiger Woods’ mother, Kultida Woods, who passed away earlier that day. Just a week prior, she was present at the SoFi Center supporting her son’s team. Woods, in an emotional statement, described his mother as his “biggest fan and greatest supporter.”
PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan acknowledged her impact, and McIlroy paid tribute post-match, recalling her warmth and generosity. “It’s very sad, sort of surreal,” he said. “She always had a big smile. You obviously feel for Tiger and his family.”
Staying on brand for the rest of the night, TGL delivered another electrifying match at the SoFi Center in Florida, as 2-time Major Champion Collin Morikawa’s Los Angeles Golf Club (LAGC) secured a commanding 6-2 victory over 27-time PGA TOUR winner Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf. This marked Boston’s second consecutive defeat and LAGC’s second straight win in the inaugural season of the TGL.

LAGC, boasting a formidable trio of Morikawa, 2016 Olympic Gold Medallist Justin Rose, and 2024 Olympic Silver Medallist Tommy Fleetwood (who stepped in for PGA TOUR winner Sahith Theegala), quickly asserted dominance. The team won the first three holes in the alternate-shot “triples” session, building an early 5-0 lead by the ninth hole.
The match was also briefly interrupted due to a technical glitch when Fleetwood’s 167-yard approach shot was incorrectly measured as moving less than a yard. Following a review, he was allowed to retake the shot, which landed in a greenside bunker. Despite the setback, LAGC capitalised on Boston’s inconsistent performance to extend their advantage.

With only one point in the standings from their previous overtime loss to Tiger Woods’ Jupiter Links, Boston now finds itself near the bottom of the TGL table. The team may look to world No. 5 Hideki Matsuyama, the only player yet to feature, as a potential game-changer.
“He might be the secret weapon,” Adam Scott suggested post-match, to which McIlroy responded, “Could be the silent assassin that we need.”
As TGL action continues, the competition heats up with a triple-header scheduled for February 17. LAGC will face Atlanta Drive GC, followed by Atlanta’s matchup against The Bay Golf Club. Boston will then attempt to turn its fortunes around against The Bay at midnight on February 18.
