Sharma, who was five-under through 14 holes, fell with bogeys on sixth and seventh. The highlight of the day was an eagle on par-5 fourth, which was his 13th hole of the day. At that stage, he was five-under, before slipping with back-to-back bogeys.

Sharma, who holds the course record of 64, said, “The greens are a lot softer compared to last year. Three-under-par is a good score to start out the tournament especially on this golf course; you need to have a good start to keep the momentum going the next few days so I am pretty happy with how I did.”

Rahil Gangjee was the next best ranked Indian today in the field with 2-under 70 for a T-16 on the board along with 11 others. Om Prakash Chouhan remained T-28, Gaganjeet Bhullar T-46, Tapy Ghai and Gaurav Pratap Singh stood T-58 for the day.
