The biggest tournament in Indian history, the inaugural $4 million DP World India Championship, will be held from October 16-19 at the Delhi Golf Club
In October this year, the Lodhi Course at Delhi Golf Club (DGC), flanked by crumbling Mughal tombs and rooted in history, will become the backdrop for the most lucrative and globally significant professional golf event the country has ever hosted.
The DP World (European) Tour has announced the addition of a brand-new tournament to its 2025 schedule—the DP World India Championship, to be held from October 16–19 at DGC. The event, co-sanctioned with the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), will carry a $4 million prize fund, making it the largest purse ever offered in a professional golf tournament on Indian soil.
The tournament will be part of the ‘Back 9’ phase of the 2025 Race to Dubai, which forms the second segment of the DP World Tour season following its five international “Global Swings”. The DP World India Championship will be the ninth of ten events in the Back 9, and will precede the Genesis Championship and the season-concluding DP World Tour Play-Offs.
This will be the first time in history that two DP World Tour events will be staged in India in the same season, with the Hero Indian Open having concluded earlier this year that was won by Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra and carried a purse of $2.25 million. The new DP World India Championship now eclipses that figure, underscoring the European Tour’s expanded commitment to the Indian market.
DGC will host a DP World Tour event for the first time since 2016 (Hero Indian Open). The Lodhi Course, known for its tree-lined fairways and Mughal-era monuments, was redesigned in 2019 by Gary Player Design, and has long been regarded as one of the most prestigious venues in Asia. It was the site of the first Indian Open in 1964 and has hosted numerous editions of the Asian Tour and PGTI events since.
The 2025 DP World India Championship will see the return of full-scale DP World Tour production and coverage at DGC, placing Indian golf and one of its most iconic venues on the international calendar once again.
The event is backed by DP World, the global logistics leader that became the title sponsor of the European Tour in 2022. Beyond golf, DP World is actively investing in Indian sports through partnerships like its sponsorship of IPL team Delhi Capitals and grassroots programs such as ‘Balls for Birdies’ and ‘Second Life’, which support community development and sustainability initiatives.
Speaking on the announcement, Rizwan Soomar, CEO and MD – India Subcontinent, Middle East, and North Africa, DP World, said: “India is an important growth market, and sport plays a major role in that story. Hosting a $4 million tournament under the DP World Tour banner reflects our ambition to grow the game through infrastructure, access and investment.”
DGC President Raj Khosla noted the honour of hosting the event: “Our course has a rich history, and we’re proud to showcase it on the DP World Tour stage. This tournament represents a new chapter for Indian golf and Delhi Golf Club.”
The inclusion of this first-ever $4 million DP World India Championship reflects the growing international interest in India as a golf market. From isolated starts and scattered wins, Indian golf has steadily grown into a thriving ecosystem. This event—on this scale, with this purse, at this venue—cements its place as a key stop on the international calendar.
