The Men’s National Squad with coaches and managers

The Indian Golf Union (IGU) is holding a camp for a 10-man National Amateur Squad from April 14-19, after a long gap. The camp at Jaypee Greens, Greater Noida, is intense and multi-disciplinary in preparation for the upcoming German International Amateur Championship scheduled from May 1-4.

The participating golfers—Arin Ahuja, Rakshit Dahiya, Sukhman Singh, Kanav Chauhan, Varun Muthappa, Ayan Gupta, Jaiveer, Deepak Yadav, Sandeep Yadav, and Vinamra Anand—were shortlisted by the IGU based on their rankings. IGW has learned that Rahul Bajaj, a former Asian Games Silver Medallist, is one of the coaches. The names of the other coaches and therapists were not announced.

Initiated in 2023 ahead of the Paris Olympic Games, the IGU National Squad System aims to create a structured high-performance pathway for amateur golfers. This year’s camp has been designed to deliver more than technical refinement, with comprehensive modules in physical fitness, physiotherapy, nutrition, and sports psychology included in the programme. The focus is on both individual development and building team cohesion ahead of global assignments.

This could be the first step by the IGU to create a support structure for top-ranked players that should  include access to swing coaches, fitness trainers, mental conditioning experts, and nutrition specialists, all collaborating to equip these athletes with the tools needed to compete globally.

With the German International Amateur just weeks away, we will watch whether the camp helps players improve their performance, since the Indian Amateur Men’s Teams have fared terribly at overseas events in recent years, with the exception of standout performances by 15-year-old Kartik Singh from Delhi (who is not in this camp).

A long-term commitment and follow-up is required by IGU to turnaround Indian Amateur Golf in order to keep up with the continuously advanced facilities available to national teams from other countries around the world.
