Sixteen-year-old Anshul Mishra from Kolkata delivered a commanding performance to win the 123rd edition of the IGU’s prestigious All India Amateur Golf Championship, held at Chandigarh Golf Club from December 9-15, defeating Bangalore’s Varun Muthappa 4 & 3 in the 36-hole final.

The All India Amateur Golf Championship, organised by the Indian Golf Union, is among the oldest amateur tournaments globally and a cornerstone event for Indian golf. The championship witnessed top players from across the country compete for the coveted title, with local lad and 2-time European (DP World) Tour winner Shubhankar Sharma—the 2012 All India Amateur Golf Championship winner—among the spectators.

Reflecting on his victory, the youngster shared his excitement. “Winning the 123rd All India Amateur Championship is a dream come true. Shubhankar sir won this title at the same age in 2012, and he has always been an inspiration for me. Lifting the trophy at his home course makes this moment even more special,” Anshul said.

He also credited his parents and coaches for their unwavering support. “I’ve been travelling alone this week, but my parents were following every round. They are thrilled with this win.”

Anshul began playing golf at the age of four at Kolkata’s Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC), one of India’s oldest and most storied golf courses. He trained initially under Inderjit Bhalotia before joining renowned coach Jesse Grewal in Chandigarh, making regular training visits every two months.

The young golfer’s journey has been marked by steady progress. He finished 17th at the 2018 US Kids World Junior Championship before improving to a runner-up position the following year at Pinehurst. Domestically, he has dominated Category A events in the Indian Golf Union circuit, clinching nine titles, including the Eastern India Amateur Championship at Golmuri Golf Course.

With aspirations to play college golf and eventually turn professional, Anshul is poised to join the ranks of Indian golfers making their mark on the global stage. His calm demeanor, relentless work ethic, and growing list of accomplishments underline his potential and a bright future ahead.
