Veer Ahlawat made the most of the Asian Tour’s return event in Phuket
25-year-old Veer Ahlawat of Gurgaon finished strongly with rounds of 67-67 to add to his opening two rounds of 70, to finish a creditable 8th at the Asian Tour’s season opening US$ 1mn Blue Canyon Championship in Phuket.
Ahlawat’s welcome pay-check of US$ 22,950 (₹ 17.2 lacs) is a just reward having recorded 7 finishes in the top 5 in his last 15 starts back in India. He had also recorded an 8th place finish at the Asian Tour’s 2019 Panasonic Open India, played at ITC Classic, Gurgaon.
The resumption of the Asian Tour is going to provide great opportunities for the Indian players who have been confined to the few events at home in the past two years where the pandemic has taken its toll on their earnings.
Ahlawat has so far recorded one win on the PGTI Tour at the Indian Oil SERVO Masters played in Digboi, Assam back in September 2019.
10 Indians made the cut of the 14 who played in Phuket, despite players having to fly to Phuket via Dubai, as direct flights to Thailand have not yet resumed. The next best finish was 23rd by Chandigarh’s Karandeep Kochhar, who leads the PGTI rankings back in India.
