25 yr old Veer Ahlawat of Gurgaon suffered a heartbreaking finish at the US$ 1mn Singapore Open , finishing double bogey – bogey to drop from 2nd to 5th place and thus missing out on a big payday and an automatic entry into the British Open at St Andrews this July, which would have been a huge achievement for the youngster. As a consolation, this was still easily his best finish in Asia.
Ahlawat shot 68-70-70-69 to finish at -7 (277), six shots behind the winner Sadom Kaewkanjana, the 23-year-old from Thailand. Ahlawat picked up US$ 42,833 (₹ 32 lacs approx.) while the next best Indian Shiv Kapur, finished 9th, making it two Indians in the top `10.
The other Indians who made the cut were Viraj Madappa (+4), tied-48th, Rashid Khan (+5), tied-53rd, and Chikkarangappa S (+8), tied-65th
The tournament also showcased an upgraded Serapong course at the famous Sentosa Golf Club, which introduced a new rugged serrated edging style to all 103 bunkers on the course and improved its consistency, texture, playability and ‘tournament-ready’ conditions that have made it one of the most challenging and popular courses in the region.
Indians pros who missed the 36-hole cut at 3-over 144:
Karandeep Kochhar (+4), Khalin Joshi (+4), Jyoti Randhawa (+4), Aman Raj (+6), S.S.P Chawrasia (+6), Jeev Milkha Singh (+15) & Abhijit Chadha WD
