16-year-old former Noida girl Anika Varma, now completing high school in Sacramento, California, continues to impress with her game. Anika shot 79-73-73-73 (14-over 298) to finish tied-19th at the Southwestern Amateur, one of the major US amateur events, held in Arizona, June 16-19th.
Earlier this month, Anika finished tied-5th at the California Women’s Amateur and in May, she made it to the Pre-Quarters of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Fourball Championship.
The Southwestern Amateur is a regional tournament dating back to 1915 with its mission to promote golf throughout the amateur communities in the desert southwest. The tournament committee issues invitations to the tournament based on World Amateur rankings with a limited field.
This was the first time that the tournament started a women’s category and had 65 lady participants showing the huge emphasis being placed on giving girls equal opportunity in golf.
