Anirban Lahiri, currently ranked 115th on Official World Golf Rankings will compete in The Open Final Qualifying at Royal Porthcawl on July 4th in England along with other LIV Golf stars like Spaniard Sergio Garcia, Aussie Marc Lieshman, former Masters champion Charl Schwartzel and others.
The only other Indian player who made it through the 18 hole regional rounds , little known Arjun Sharma who has two runner up finishes on the PGT of India, will play at West Lancashire.
A total of 15 regional qualifiers with 2000 entries were staged from which 288 players advanced to the four hole final qualifiers at Dundonald Links, Royal Cinque Ports, Royal Porthcawl, and West Lancashire. The four 36 hole final qualifiers will be held on July 4th for the 4 available spots at each venue.
The absence of PGTI players in the qualifiers is probably because the 15 regional qualifiers were played on June 26th and The Open championship itself takes place July 20-24 which means an indian golfer would have to stay in UK for almost a month, making this too expensive and impractical and hence PGTI players don’t travel for the qualifiers.
Arjun Sharma earned his spot in the Final Qualifying by shooting an impressive 3-under 67, securing second position at a Regional Qualifier in Northamptonshire County.
The only Indian already exempt into The Open is Shubhankar Sharma based on his top 30 finish in the 2022 European Tour Rankings.
