Rayhan Thomas keeps his eye on the prize in Thailand

UAE born-and-bred Indian national Rayhan Thomas, playing on a sponsor invite, registered his second top-10 finish at the US$2 million International Series Thailand event on the Asian Tour, finishing T7 at the Thai Country Club in Bangkok, with rounds of 69-63-64-68 at a total score of 16-under-par. “It has been a very good week for me,” Rayhan said after completing his round. “To play with Peter Uihlein was a real treat,” he added, referring to his Oklahoma State University teammate, the overnight leader by 3 shots, who ended up narrowly missing out on a win to finish one shot behind at T2.

It was Chinese Taipei’s Lee Chieh-po who finally claimed his maiden title on the Asian Tour, firing a stunning final-round 63 to win the $360,000 top prize with a 21-under-par total of 259.

Gaganjeet Bhullar carried his newfound form with a strong T19 finish at 14-under-par, which moved him up to 49th in the Asian Tour Rankings and to 23rd in the International Series Rankings, the leading Indian player in both.

It was also a good week for Chandigarh-based youngster Karandeep Kochhar, who closed out at 13-under-par, just a shot behind Bhullar, to finish at T24.

The 8 remaining Indians, who failed to secure a spot on the weekend, included –
Varun Chopra (-3), Veer Ahlawat (-3), Ajeetesh Sandhu (-1), Honey Baisoya (-1), S.S.P. Chawrasia (E), Shiv Kapur (E), Chikkarangappa S. (+4), and Yuvraj Singh Sandhu (+4).

Players this week are at the BNI Indonesian Masters at the Royale Jakarta Golf Club, where Bhullar will look to defend his title, while Bubba Watson will be one of the star attractions of the week.
