The hugely popular AVT Champions Senior Amateur Tour, which started in 2019,  is all set to play its 7th edition at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in Kolkata on Nov. 10-11. The Tour which helps Indian veteran players prepare for international competition is played as a 36 hole Gross Strokeplay competition and is open to players over age 50 with handicaps of 14 and below.

The AVT Champions Tour,  an initiative of Chennai industrialist and veteran international golf administrator Dilip Thomas and a national committee of veteran golfers, has created a vibrant community of competitive golfers in their 50’s and 60’s following the lead of active senior amateur circuits in other developed golf nations which boast as many as 40 to 50 tournaments each year. Prior to 2019, the only tournament for seniors in India was the All India Seniors conducted by IGU from where a six member team was selected for the Asia Pacific Senior Amateur Championship. Veterans like Gangesh Khaitan and Vijay Kumar of Delhi have represented India for over a decade in the Asia Pacific event while former cricket legend Kapil Dev and members of the 1982 Asian Games gold medal winning team, Lakshman Singh, Amit Luthra and Rishi Narain have also featured regularly for India.

The AVT Tour will stage two more tournaments before the end of March 2022 to complete the current season.
