Celebrities throng Pebble Beach Pro-Am

Golf has never been more popular among celebrities from sports and entertainment, than it is today. The annual AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am showcases this best.  Having started in 1947 by golf loving film star Bing Crosby, the current format of the tournament consists of 156 professionals and 156 amateurs playing three courses –  Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. The amateurs have become an integral part of the event and range from movie stars to professional athletes to titans of business and industry. 

Here are a selection of celebrities who were at the tournament last week.

  1. Bill Murray –The 72-year-old movie star is well known for his love of golf and is a regular at the tournament. He has a 16-handicap and loves to entertain the crowd on the course.

2. Ray Romano – The actor and comedian is another regular at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Best known for his starring role in the hit TV show ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’, the 65-year old plays off a handicap of 16. Although he missed the cut this week, he kept the crowd entertained.

3. Jason Bateman – The 54-year-old-golden-globe-winning actor is also a director and producer. He is best known for playing Michael Bluth in the Fox/Netflix sitcom Arrested Development.

4. Gareth Bale – The former Welsh footballer, who most notably played as a winger for Tottenham Hotspurs and Real Madrid, played in his first pro-am post retirement and was fun to watch too.

5. Arnett Will – The canadian actor is famous for playing the lead role in Netflix series, BoJack Horseman.

6. Aaron Rodgers – The 39-year-old American Football quarterback of the Green Bay Packers is famous for making appearances at golf tournaments. He also played in an all-American Football version of a charity Match in which he played with other American football superstars Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes & Josh Allen

7. Condoleezza Rice – The former US Secretary of State is currently the director of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University. In 2012, she was one of the first two female members admitted to Augusta National Golf Club, the home of the Masters tournament, which had been previously criticised for not allowing women to join the club.
