The Delhi Golf Club announced Mastercard as presenting sponsor when the club hosts its first own international tournament, The DGC Open which is scheduled to tee off from March 24-27, 2022. The US$ 500,000 tournament has been sanctioned by the Asian Tour, which has signed a five-year deal with the club. The long term goal is to make the tournament a million dollar event with some of the world’s best golfers competing in it.
The DGC open hopes to be one of the standout tournaments in the early part of the 2022 season on the Asian Tour and will mark the return of Asian Tour to India after a gap of two and a half years. The last Asian Tour event staged in India was won by Korean teenager Joohyung Kim in November 2019.
“The addition of the DGC Open presented by Mastercard to our 2022 schedule is a massive boost for the Asian Tour and something we have been working very hard on behind the scenes to facilitate,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO of the Asian Tour. “The Delhi Golf Club – the quintessential home of golf in India – has been a regular host venue on the Asian Tour for many years, and we are extremely grateful for their continued support, which is especially important to us in these unprecedented times.”
Nine-time Major winner Gary Player, who redesigned the Delhi Golf Club in 2019, is expected to be in attendance during the tournament.
The Delhi Golf Club is dedicating the first DGC Open to the memory of the late Siddharth Shriram, ex-President of DGC, who conceived the tournament.
This is an extremely positive initiative by Delhi GC and marks the entry of a significant new corporate sponsor into Indian international pro golf which augurs well for the game in this country.
