The Olympic Men’s tournament turned out to be a real thriller as a dozen top class players were in contention on the back nine and Xander Schaffele, showed real grit and determination making birdie on the 17th and getting up and down from 98 yards on the final hole to win by one after looking a little shaky for a while.
Fittingly World No 12 Rory McIlroy admitted that he took back his pre tournament remarks about the Olympics and that the atmosphere and experience of being part of the Games and staying at the village , was amazing and different than anything he had seen before.
There is no doubt that the Olympics attracts the attention of a broader section of a country’s sports fans than the usual PGA Tour events or even majors. In due course, we hope India will produce a medal winner which will certainly fuel much needed interest in the game..
