Veer made his 3rd cut in Kenya out of the 5 events he has played so far but finished last at the 68th position
With just two events left in the International Swing of the European (DP World) Tour, Indian representation remains on the periphery with a faint presence, struggling to make an impact on the leaderboard.
Only 2 Indians have playing rights in Europe this year – 2024 Indian Open runner-up Veer Ahlawat, who earned his full card by virtue of winning the 2024 PGTI Rankings, and 2-time European Tour Winner Shubhankar Sharma, who retained his playing rights in Europe for an 8th successive season.
At the recently concluded $2.5 million Magical Kenya Open, held in Nairobi from February 20-23, Veer narrowly made the 36-hole cut at level-par 142 but struggled over the weekend, finishing as the last player in the field. His four-round total of 5-over 289 placed him in 68th position. Despite the lacklustre finish, he has still gained valuable ranking points.
Sharma, on the other hand, endured another frustrating week. The Chandigarh-based golfer missed the cut by a single stroke, carding a 1-over 143 after two rounds. With the highly-anticipated Hero Indian Open on the horizon next month, Sharma will be looking to regain form, especially to capitalise on the advantage of playing on familiar turf at the DLF Golf and Country Club next month.
Next Stop: South Africa
Sharma now shifts focus to South Africa for the last two events of the International Swing, as Veer returns home for a short break. The Investec South African Open Championship, set for February 27 to March 2 at Durban Country Club, presents an opportunity for Sharma to open his account in the DP World Tour’s Race To Dubai Rankings before the tour moves into its next phase.
