Anirban Lahiri shot 71-69 (even-par 140) to miss the cut by a single stroke at the US$ 15mn FedEx St. Jude Classic and as a result dropped to 74th in the Fedex Cup rankings, which means he does not go forward to the second event in the series – the US$ 15mn BMW Championship, next week since only the top 70 advance to the next round.
PGA Tour rookie Sahith Theegala, the 24-year-old American of Indian origin, finished tied for 13th which moved him to 27th in the FedEx Cup rankings, earning him a spot in this week’s BMW Championship and giving him a good shot at making the lucrative season-ending Tour Championship the following week as well. Theegala, has had 3 chances at victory in 2022 and with over US$2.5 million in prize money is making a big name for himself on the PGA Tour.
The first event of the 3 week Fedex Cup Playoffs was won by 25 yr old American Will Zalatoris in a dramatic three-hole playoff with Sepp Straka. The 25-year-old Zalatoris has 5 runner up finishes and 16 top 10’s on tour before breaking through for his first win this week. He holed a dramatic 10-foot putt for par on the 72nd hole and then a 15 footer and a 7 footer to win the playoff.

On the 3rd playoff hole, a 148 yard par 3, both players shockingly hit wedges in the water hazard and had to play 90 yard approaches from the drop zone. Zalatoris pitched to seven feet and made the bogey putt for his long awaited win.

Zalatoris earned 2000 FedEx points and moved to No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings, ahead of World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler going into the BMW Championship from where the top 30 qualify for the Tour Championship scheduled in Atlanta, Georgia.
The player with the most points after the Tour Championship wins the FedEx Cup and the $18 million first-place bonus prize (total bonus fund is $75 million). The runner-up gets $6.5 million, 3rd place $5 million, 4th place $4 million, 5th place $3 million, and so on down to $85,000 for 126th through 150th place.
