Oakland Hills Clubhouse on the day of fire incident

A major fire on Feb 17th practically destroyed the historic clubhouse at the famed Oakland Hills Country Club in Michigan USA, which has hosted six U.S. Opens and the 2004 Ryder Cup. The course is ranked No. 21 in America  by Golf Digest.

The fire is a reminder that older Indian golf courses need to preserve and protect their heritage clubhouses and history, as well as ensuring they have the proper insurance to financially withstand such a disaster.

The club recently spent $12 million to restore its South Course and will host the U.S. Women’s Open in 2031 and 2042.

Golfing great Jack Nicklaus said the clubhouse “is as much a part of the story as the golf course itself” and while the building would be rebuilt, “it will be difficult to replace the many memories”.
