Gandas wins as PGTI returns to Chennai

Manu Gandas of Gurgaon recorded his 3rd victory of the season shooting  68-65-68-67 for a convincing four-shot victory as  the PGTI returned to Chennai after a few years’ gap at TNGF Cosmo Golf Club.

The 26-year-old, who ended the 2021 PGTI season ranked 9th, finished at 20-under 268 to add to his  Ahmedabad win in March and Noida win in April which moves him to 3rd for this year’s PGTI Order of Merit.

Gandas began the final day one shot out of the lead but drew level with a chip-in birdie on the first followed by another on the 2nd and on the ninth where he rolled in a 10-footer. 

On the back nine, Gandas extended his lead with birdie putts from 20 to 30 feet on the 13th and 16th holes. With a comfortable cushion, he found the par-5 18th green in two and two-putted for a closing birdie and a 4 shot victory.

Sri Lanka’s N Thangaraja, the overnight leader shot a final round 72 that included three bogeys on the front nine, after shooting 66-67-67 in his first three rounds. He finished at 16-under in 2nd place a stroke ahead of Coimbatore Open winner last week, Bengaluru’s Khalin Joshi  and Chandigarh’s Abhijit Chadha who took third place at 15-under 273 while Chandigarh’s Karandeep Kochhar, finished on 14 under to round out the top 5.

Former India cricketer Murali Vijay participated as an amateur but withdrew after the first round.
