The Indian men’s contingent sponsored by the Indian Golf Union, including 2019 & 2021 All India Amateur Champion, Aryan Roopa Anand from Bangalore, 2021 runner-up Yuvraj Singh, Shaurya Bhattacharya and Milind Soni are in England this week for The Amateur Championship, one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur championships in the world, being held at the venerable Royal Lytham & St. Annes, which is also a venue for the Open Championship, by rotation.
A three member IGU ladies squad with teenage amateurs Avani Prashanth, Sneha Singh and Nishna Patel will head to England for The Women’s Amateur Championship from June 20-25. Both squads provide invaluable world amateur ranking points and top class international competitive experience for the young players on world class courses. These players will represent India later this year at the World Amateur Team Championships in Paris and various other events.
Following the Women’s Amateur, 15 year old Avani Prashanth will participate as an amateur in the Ladies European Tour’s Euro 300,000 Amundi German Masters, on a rare and highly coveted sponsor’s invitation where she will go up against Europe’s best female professional players.
Some of golf’s greatest names have won The Amateur Championship including Masters Champions Bobby Jones, Sergio Garcia and José María Olazábal which is contested over stroke play and then match play. The final winner secures exemptions into The British Open, the US Open, and by tradition, an invitation to play in the Masters Tournament.
It normally has the widest international representation of any individual amateur event, with 38 golf federations from all six continents represented in the 2018 championship.
