The most competitive women’s amateur event in the world featured a number of golfers of Indian origin last week at Chambers Bay in the state of Washington. Like Indian origin boys Akshay Bhatia who made the cut at the US Open last summer and Sahith Theegala who has earned over US$2.5 million in his rookie season on the 2022 PGA Tour, girls of Indian descent too are making a name for themselves in America.
India Golf Weekly counted a record 5 girls of Indian origin who made it through to the matchplay knockout section after 36 holes strokeplay qualifying.
Megha Ganne from New Jersey who shot to stardom after leading the 2021 US Women’s Open as a 15 year old was one of the favourites but lost in the first round of matchplay on the 19th hole. She has already accepted a golf scholarship at Stanford University after graduating from high school in 2023.
Previously Ganne has played for the US Teams against Europe in both the Junior Solheim Cup 2021 and the Curtis Cup winning team in 2022.
Catherine Rao from California who attends Princeton University lost in the pre quarter finals after winning the first two rounds of matchplay.

Savannah Grewal from Ontario, Canada who attends Clemson University in South Carolina lost 1 up in the round of 32.

Grewal will be a 4th year on the 2022-23 Clemson team where she has been a standout performer.
Angela Arora from Surrey, Canada won the 2022 – NextGen Pacific Championship & CJGA Western Canadian Championship and lost her first round in matchplay on the 19th hole.

Ami Gianchandani from New Jersey who attends Yale University where she was named Ivy League Player of Year, winning two college events also lost in the first round of match play by 3&2.
