The PGTI contingent was outclassed by a second string of European Tour players at the US$ 300,000 Delhi Challenge staged at Classic Golf & CC in Gurgaon while 37-year-old John Parry from England carded rounds of 66-69-68-65 to register a win by one-shot margin at a total score of 20-under 268.
Honey Baisoya was the best placed Indian, as he shot 71-68-68-67 to be tied-12th at 14-under par. Many of the top ranked Indians were playing this week at a US$2 million Asian Tour event in Macau, resulting in a lack of Indian representation at the top of the leaderboard. The clash of dates is a result of the lack of cooperation between the Asian and European Tours, and also PGTI who have taken a decision not to co-sanction tournaments with the Asian Tour and their erstwhile partners for over 25 years.
The 20-under par score is low, but Classic Golf Resort has seen a 32-under par total from Chapchai Nirat of Thailand when he lifted the SAIL Open while setting a 72-hole record on the Asian Tour in 2009.
This week, a second US$300,000 Challenge Tour event is being staged at Royal Calcutta GC and Indian stars like PGA Tour winner Arjun Atwal, European Tour winners Gaganjeet Bhullar & SSP Chawrasia plus young guns Yuvraj Singh Sandhu and Karandeep Kochhar are making their appearances.
