The 2nd National Qualifier of the IGU Amateur Tour saw a maxed-out field of 240 players competing for a place in the 2025 season
The Indian Golf Union (IGU) Amateur Tour National Qualifier 2 got underway at the Rambagh Golf Club in Jaipur from February 17-21, marking a staggering field of 240 players competing for a place in the 2025 season.
This surge in participation contrasts sharply with the first National Qualifier held at Coimbatore Golf Club from January 27-31, which saw only 50 entries, attributed to a scheduling clash with the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI) Qualifying Tournament, where several top-ranked amateurs competed for their professional tour cards.
Tournament format and qualification process
The National Qualifiers follow a 72-hole stroke play format, with players competing over 18 holes each day. Given the exceptionally high number of entries exceeding 130, the first round took place over two days with a progressive cut system to streamline competition:
- After Round 1 (played over two days), only the top 72 players and ties advance to the second round.
- After Round 2, the field is further trimmed, with the top 50 players and ties moving forward.
- The final round determines the top 30 players and ties who will secure spots in the 2025 IGU Gentlemen’s Tour calendar
- The rest of the field for the 2025 season will be completed by the Top-50 players in last year’s Rankings, Top-5 players in the Feeder Tour Rankings, and the qualifying players from National Qualifier 1 in Coimbatore.
- IGU Amateur Tour events typically have 120-140 participants per tournament.
The upcoming 2025 IGU National Amateur season has 13 scheduled events of 72 holes, with the first tournament of the official circuit—the IGU Telangana Amateur Championship—taking place at the Hyderabad Golf Association from February 24-28.
With an unprecedented number of entrants and a competitive field, the IGU National Qualifier 2 in Jaipur has set a high benchmark for future amateur events in India, reinforcing the growing appeal of the country’s golfing landscape.
