Jeev Milkha Singh who turned 50 last year and has played a few senior events in USA and Europe with one 3rd place finish to his credit, made people sit up and notice as he was 4 shots off the lead going into the final round at one of the Senior majors – the US$ 2.85 mn Senior (British) Open last week.
Jeev eventually followed up rounds of 69–77-71 with a final day 79 for a 12-over total of 296 to drop to 14th in wet and windy conditions at Royal Porthcawl GC in Wales. The final round saw wind gusting as high as 40 miles an hour, making for incredibly difficult conditions, and leading to high scores.
Alex Cejka won the tournament in a playoff over Padraig Harrington.
The Senior Open serves as the fifth and final major championship for golfers aged 50 and above for the season. Singh now ranks 40th on the Legends Tour Career Money List, with 138.4 points.
Singh was joined in Wales by Arjun Atwal and Jyoti Randhawa, who missed the cut despite a hole in one by Jyoti in round 1.
While Atwal earned his place as a former PGA Tour winner, Randhawa finished in the top 7 at one of the pre qualifiers.
Singh shared an interesting story about playing the British Amateur at Royal Porthcawl as a 15 year old youngster about 38 years ago.
