World No. 44 Mito Pereira joins LIV Golf

LIV Golf, the Saudi funded golf league which has disturbed the status quo in world golf,  made a strong Latin American play by signing 27-year-old Chilean Mito Pereira & 30-year-old Sebastian Munoz of Colombia for its 2023 season on the eve of its first event in Mexico. Both of them will join team Torque GC captained by 24-year-old two-time PGA Tour winner, Joaquin Niemann of Chile. Pereira was the defending champion at last week’s Genesis Invitational on the PGA Tour but obviously couldn’t play.

Colombia’s Munoz, who also has a win on the PGA Tour played on the 2022 International Team in the Presidents Cup alongside Pereira but neither will be eligible for the team the next time the tournament comes around.

According to The Telegraph, 31-year-old Belgian Thomas Pieters, ranked 34th in the world, has also signed with LIV. And ESPN has confirmed that  39-year-old American Brendan Steele, who has won three-times on the PGA Tour, and 32-year-old New Zealander Danny Lee, who has won on both the PGA & European Tours, have also joined the rival league.

The official announcement for these three players is expected this week.

The 14-event LIV Golf schedule begins later this month in Mexico.
