Mannat Brar, a product of Pune Golf Club dominated the 2024 IGU Eastern India Ladies & Junior Girls Golf Championship at Tollygunge Club from April 17-19th, claiming both the A Girls’ and Ladies categories and the overall title. Brar endured scorching conditions to finish with a 7-over-217. Another Pune GC product, Ananya Datar finished tied-11th at the WGAI event at Tollygunge Club , Kolkata and is ranked 10th on WGAI rankings.
The Pune GC under the leadership of club golf captain Ikram Khan, a former national hockey player and President of the Maharashtra Hockey Association since 2020 has taken several steps to produce junior champions including a recent introductory camp for school kids under former Indian Open champion Ali Sher, who travelled from Delhi. Ali Sher was assisted by Raju Shinde and Ajay Controllu at the camp.
The junior camp attracted some 70 students from Lexicon School and will be followed up by another junior camp from May 5 to 15th which is free for kids of Pune Club members and only Rs 4000 for non-member kids.
The club provides physical training at the clubhouse gym as well as offers 30 kids scholarships worth Rs 20 lacs total and free lunch and breakfast based on donations collected from members.
Pune Golf Club is a shining example of clubs taking pride across the country in developing champions, which India badly requires considering how competitive the game is getting internationally. Our juniors, amateurs and professionals need all the help they can get in order to keep pace with the rising standards of play worldwide due to availability of better coaching, golf courses and competition levels in various conditions.
In the IGU tournament, Anuradha Chaudhuri from Maharashtra secured second place with 218, closely followed by UP’s Zara Anand at 219. Guntas Kaur Sandhu of Chandigarh triumphed in the B Category with a total score of 225, while Ojaswini Saraswat from Rajasthan clinched victory in the C Girls’ category with 231.
