16 year olds Mannat Brar of Chandigarh and Nishna Patel from Mumbai, ranked 1 and 2 on the IGU’s Women’s Rankings respectively, will play this week at the R&A’s Girls Amateur in England from Aug 15-20, with 144 girls from 15 countries.
Last year India’s Avani Prashanth qualified 14th in the 36 hole stroke play segment of this event and made it to the round of 16 in matchplay when the event was played at Carnoustie in Scotland.
Nishna, having finished 2nd at the Asia-Pacific Juniors in Manila a couple of months back and Mannat who is coming off a couple of convincing victories on the IGU ladies circuit should be able to do well in England this week.
First played in 1919, the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship is a highly coveted junior title. Past winners include major champions and Solheim Cup players such as Anna Nordqvist, Suzann Pettersen, Azahara Munoz and Georgia Hall. More recently, Slovenia’s Pia Babnik triumphed in 2019 and has gone on to win on the Ladies’ European Tour.
The winner gains exemptions into the Women’s Amateur Championship, the US Girls’ Junior Championship, Final Qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open and by tradition, an invite to compete at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.
