In a riveting night-time showdown at “Capital One’s The Match,” the mix gender version of “THE MATCH” featuring PGA Tour stars Max Homa & Rory McIlroy and LPGA stars Lexi Thompson, and Rose Zhang, was a big hit. With all proceeds benefiting charity, Max Homa’s comedic banter and Rory McIlroy’s precise shots under the lights stole the show. The four-player, 12-hole skins game was played at The Park in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Despite Homa’s humour and struggles, McIlroy dominated early, winning six of the first eight skins. The final four skins carried over, leading to a closest-to-the-pin challenge from 100 yards, worth $1.1 million for charity. McIlroy sealed the victory by sticking a wedge to 4 feet, accumulating 10 skins and $1.9 million for charity, while Thompson secured two skins worth $200,000. The event which has featured the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, American football stars Tom Brady, Basketball great Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, has raised over $41 million for charity over its nine editions.
