Patrick Reed’s presence will add excitement to Asian Tour events
2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed of USA, one of the star players who has switched to the LIV GOLF Tour is scheduled to play Asian Tour events starting with the US$ 1.5mn International Series in Singapore this week which will also see 16 Indians in the field.
Reed, who is currently ranked no. 46 in the world, has announced intentions to play the International Series Korea event next week in a bid to earn world ranking points which could keep him eligible to get into the major championships next year.
At the LIV Golf event in New York last week Reed earned $975,000 for finishing fifth in the 48-player field, plus $750,000 for being on Dustin Johnson’s winning 4 member team. His presence in Singapore is sure to draw more fans out to watch and the Asian Tour is already gearing up for bigger crowds than usual.
Reed’s decision to play in Asian Tour events is noteworthy for two reasons. The first is that LIV does not offer OWGR (Official World Golf Ranking) points and Reed’s 5 year exemption from his 2018 Masters victory into the other three majors have run out. The second is that Reed said he joined LIV because he was tired of the constant travel the PGA Tour required. “It wears on you as an athlete, wears on you as a person, as a father, and this is for me, I feel like this is the best decision ever,” Reed said at the time.
Now if he continues to play in Asia, he will be travelling even farther to play golf than he would have had to on the PGA Tour.
After the two events in Asia, Reed will return to USA to play LIV’s 4th event this year with a purse of US$25 million scheduled for Sept. 16-18 in Chicago.
