The DP World Tour and the PGA Tour have moved closer together in an attempt to counter the appeal of the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Series. Last week the two tours announced a new 13-year joint-venture that builds on the existing Strategic Alliance between them that was created in 2020.
The new agreement requires the PGA TOUR to increase its existing stake in European Tour Productions from 15 percent to 40 percent, and the two tours will work together to coordinate a worldwide schedule. On its part, the DP World Tour will guarantee increases in prize money for its players every year for the next five years.
The new joint venture will also provide additional opportunities for players on both tours as well as players on lesser tours, such as the Sunshine Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia. Players on the latter two tours will now get a formal pathway to membership on the DP World Tour, while from 2023, the top ten players on DP World Tour Rankings, excluding those already exempt, will earn PGA TOUR cards for the following season.
In addition to this, DP World Tour members will have access to the 3 new big money international events announced by PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan.
The one significant advantage the two main tours have over the LIV series is that they provide a path for players to earn membership on these tours through their performances on the golf course. This is something the LIV Tour, which is currently invitation only, lacks. You either get invited or you get left out.
