26-year-old Manu Gandas of Gurgaon shot 63-68-67-66 (24-under 264) to win the inaugural Vooty Masters 2022 at Vooty Golf County in Telangana. It was Gandas’s fifth win of the season on the PGTI, matching the tour record that has previously been achieved three times.
Ashok Kumar was the first to do it in 2007 while Gaganjeet Bhullar matched his feat in 2009. Yuvraj Singh Sandhu, who leads the PGTI Order of Merit, has also won five times this year, making this the first ever PGTI season in which two players have won that many times.
Gandas won the Vooty Masters by four shots over Om Prakash Chouhan of Mhow who shot 66-63-73-66 (20-under 268) to finish second. Delhi’s Shamim Khan shot a fine 64 on Sunday to secure third place at 16-under 272.
Gandas took home the winning cheque worth Rs. 15,00,000 and remains in second position in the TATA Steel PGTI Ranking with earnings of Rs. 65,78,938.
“I took it one shot at a time and stayed in the present,” Gandas said after his victory. “I had a bad start on the back-nine but was steady thereafter and set up a lot of birdie opportunities for myself. Overall, it was a solid round barring a couple of mistakes.
“I tend to get a bit aggressive as the round progresses but I managed to keep that tendency in check. I kept my composure well.
“I kept the intensity going after I got my first birdie on the back-nine. I’m quite pleased with the records added to my name but my focus is more on taking my game to the next level. This win gives me the momentum for the final two events of the season.”
With two big money events left on the 2022 PGTI calendar, both Sandhu and Gandas have the chance to create history and set a new record for single season prize money on the PGTI.
