Team USA celebrate their 13th Presidents Cup win in Quebec, Canada

The 15th staging of the biennial Presidents Cup, being held in Montreal, Canada, which sees the top 12 U.S. stars take on 12 International stars (outside of Europe) ended in an expected victory for powerful Team USA for the 10th consecutive time.

The tournament, which was promoted by the PGA Tour as a counterpart to the more competitive Ryder Cup, ended with the U.S. ahead 18.5 to 11.5. The International team has only won the event once, in 1998, under Peter Thomson’s captaincy at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.

Team USA Ranking World Team Internationals Ranking
Scottie Scheffler 1 Hideki Matsuyama (Japan) 7
Xander Schauffele 2 Sungjae Im (South Korea) 21
Collin Morikawa 4 Adam Scott (Australia) 18
Wyndham Clark 6 Tom Kim (South Korea) 24
Patrick Cantlay 9 Jason Day (Australia) 33
Sahith Theegala 12 Byeong Hun An (South Korea) 35
Keegan Bradley 14 Christiaan Bezuidenhout (South Africa) 45
Sam Burns 19 Corey Conners (Canada) 37
Tony Finau 23 Mackenzie Hughes (Canada) 62
Brian Harman 22 Si Woo Kim (South Korea) 50
Russell Henley 15 Min Woo Lee (Australia) 40
Max Homa 25 Taylor Pendrith (Canada) 44

Although the four-day matches were tied after two days, Team USA took a 4 point lead after Day 3 and never left the result in doubt during the final day of 12 singles matches.

Even though Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama defeated World No 1 Scottie Scheffler, the likes of superstars World no 2 Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay and Colin Morikawa were too much firepower for the International side.

It remains to be seen how the President’s Cup can create more interest as the continuous victories and lack of close results sees dwindling interest in the match, unlike the Ryder Cup where Europe and USA have provided so many thrilling moments in recent decades.

The International team boasted 3 Canadians playing at home under Canadian captain and former Masters champion Mike Weir. It also boasted four Koreans who are regulars on the PGA Tour. However, the absence of a Korean vice captain was noticeable after Korean golf legend K.J. Choi declined the invitation for a role he has filled six times. The vice-captains were Ernie Els & Trevor Immelman from South Africa plus Aussie Geoff Ogilvy, and Colombia’s Camilo Villegas.
