Four-time major winner, Rory Mclroy, collects sixth Race to Dubai title and third DP World Tour Championship to match golfing legend Seve Ballesteros’ tally and move within two of Colin Montgomerie’s Order of Merit record

Four-time major champion Rory McIlroy overcame a recent series of heartbreaking 2nd place finishes to seal the season-ending DP World (European) Tour Championship for the third time and claim his sixth Race to Dubai (Rankings) title on Sunday, matching the tally of legendary Spaniard, Seve Ballesteros. When asked what it meant to equal Ballesteros’ record, Mclroy broke down on live television. “It’s really cool. I think everyone knows what Seve means to European golf. In the European Ryder Cup locker room, all we have are quotes of Seve,” said McIlroy, who is now two behind all-time record holder Scotland’s legendary Colin Montgomerie’s tally of eight.

Having entered the final event of the season with a commanding lead in the rankings, McIlroy knew only a victory from South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence could deny him the top spot. However, Lawrence’s challenge faltered, leaving McIlroy to cruise to victory.

“It means a lot,” said McIlroy, reflecting on the challenging year that included both personal and professional hurdles. “I’ve persevered, had close calls, and to get over the line like this feels like a fitting end to 2024.”

Dane Rasmus Højgaard, who stayed close throughout the day, remained McIlroy’s closest rival for the week but fell short, finishing at 13-under-par despite a birdie at the 17th. France’s Antoine Rozner finished in a tie for third alongside Aussie Adam Scott and Irishman Shane Lowry at 11-under-par.

The victory earned McIlroy not only the Race to Dubai crown but also reinforces his standing as the leading figure in world golf, behind Tiger Woods. With the season now behind him, McIlroy looks forward to a well-deserved break, surrounded by family and friends in Dubai.
