After playing last week at the famous Leopard Creek course, as part of the IGU’s international exposure program, a four-member Indian amateur contingent consisting of Shaurya Bhattacharya, Vinamra Anand, Harimohan Singh, and Milind Soni participated in the South African Stroke Play Championship.
The squad found the competition tough as Bhattacharya, India’s top-ranked amateur from Delhi, shot 70-72-71-76 (1-over 289) to once again finish as the leading Indian, tied for 16th.
Last week Shaurya finished 9th at Leopard Creek while the international exposure in South Africa following the January trip to Australia is providing invaluable experience to the top Indian players.
However after repeated poor showings by Indian male amateurs at international events in the past year, it is time for the Indian Golf Union to relook at how their squads prepare for and cope with foreign trips as compared to other competing national teams; which while providing exposure, have failed to produce encouraging results.
