In a welcome trend for Indian juniors, 16-year-old Anika Varma, formerly of Noida and currently a high-schooler in California officially signed with Oregon University’s Women’s Golf Team to play for them from 2022 to 2026.
Anika, currently training under Noah Montgomery in California has had a significant amateur career in India and has recently performed exceptionally in California amateur events.
Just last week, Anika helped her Granite Bay High School team win at Pebble Beach, California and produced the best ever finish.
Anika also finished tied-9th, the best finish ever by an Indian at the prestigious Women’s Amateur Asia Pacific (WAAP) Championship in Abu Dhabi in November, after travelling back from the USA.
Last year, Anika played several events on the Cactus Pro Tour in Arizona, where she recorded a tied-2nd finish back in March 2020. In October 2019, Anika had finished 5th at the Ladies European Tour’s Hero Women’s Indian Open at the challenging DLF Golf & CC.
When asked about her decision to sign with Oregon Women’s Golf, Anika said, “Oregon has been my dream school throughout the recruiting process. The first time I talked to the coaches, they were amazing and I fell in love with the program as well. Playing on the Oregon golf team is going to be a challenge that would help me improve my golf game and take it to the next level. My high school golf career has come to a successful end and I can’t wait to continue this golf journey in college. I’m gonna mature during my college golf career because I will be surrounded by good golfers and role models who will teach me to improve as a golfer and an overall person.”
Derek Radley, the head coach of Oregon Women’s Golf on signing of Anika said, “We are very excited to welcome Anika to our Oregon family, she has proven herself on the big stage for a long time and is extremely driven with big dreams. She comes from a wonderful and supportive family and we are thankful she chose to join ours. Sky is the limit with this one we couldn’t be more excited.”
