The governing bodies for golf, the USGA and the R&A, in a step to limit how far golfers can hit the ball, have announced a rule reducing the length of the driver from 48 inches to 46 starting Jan 1, 2022 for professionals and elite amateurs only.
This proposal is based on research from the bodies’ Distance Insights Project.
DeChambeau, who’s driving distance has perhaps forced the Tours to take action, did try his hands on using a 48-inch driver prior to the 2020 Masters, but went back to a 45 ¾ inches Cobra driver afterwards.
While the number of pros using a driver that exceeds 46-inch is extremely low, it includes the PGA Championship winner Phil Mickelson and LPGA star Brooke Henderson. Mickelson has been quite vocal on the rule, even saying the USGA is trying to make golf less fun.
Word is USGA is soon rolling back driver length to 46inches.This is PATHETIC.1st it promotes a shorter more violent swing (injury prone,) doesn’t allow for length of arc to create speed, and during our 1st golf boom in 40 years, our amateur gov body keeps trying to make it less fun

The USGA is trying to ban the sale of ice cream in NYC?
Hear me out – Restricting the driver length (again) is misreading the data (again). pic.twitter.com/mbfTOsSVx8— Phil Mickelson (@PhilMickelson) September 2, 2021
