The most awaited amateur tournament for seniors, the AVT Champions Tour is all set for the 7th edition at the historic Royal Calcutta Golf Club in Kolkata from Nov. 10-11. The tour which prepares Indian veteran players for international competition is played as a 36 hole Gross Strokeplay competition and is open to players over age 50 with handicaps of 14 and below.
The upcoming edition is being sponsored by Apollo Vredestein Tyres. The Tour last played at Eagleton Golf Resort in January 2021, after a successful return at Gurgaon’s Classic Golf & Country Club in November 2020 . Each edition sees around 100 enthusiastic senior golfers compete.
At this edition, 85 outstation players are flying in to Kolkata to compete with a contingent of 40 players travelling from Delhi NCR alone. Bangalore will see 14 golfers, with 8 from Mumbai, 7 players each from Chandigarh and Pune and 15 from Kolkata.
The AVT Champions Tour, an initiative of Chennai industrialist and veteran international golf administrator Dilip Thomas and a national committee of veteran golfers, has created a vibrant community of competitive golfers in their 50’s and 60’s following the lead of active senior amateur circuits in other developed golf nations which boast as many as 40 to 50 tournaments each year.
There are competitive divisions in the age categories over 50, over 55, over 60, over 65 and over 70 years.
The AVT Tour will stage two more tournaments before the end of March 2022 to complete the 2021-22 season. An overall season champion and champions in each age group will be crowned based on the cumulative performances in the Bangalore, Kolkata, Pune and Delhi legs.
