MASTERS SPECIAL
Matsuyama’s playing partner on Sunday, Xander Schauffele who performs well in the majors, made a late charge with four consecutive birdies on 12, 13, 14 and 15. In fact, he could have very well have eagled the last three as after missing a 12 foot eagle putt on 13, his approach lipped out and finished just a foot away on the par four 14th. Then on the par five 15th, his greenside bunker shot, again lipped out, finishing a few inches behind the cup. And when Matsuyama’s long approach finished in the water over the green, the lead was down to 2 shots with 3 to play. With the momentum in Schauffele’s favour, the tournament was far from over. However Schauffele’s approach to the par 3 16th was on too aggressive a line to the pin which was set on the left extreme near the water. The ball flew in line with the pin and spun into the lake , as it usually does, which resulted in a triple, drowning Schauffele’s challenge.
