Global Indians
20-year-old Chandigarh Sifat Sagoo, who moved in 2019 to Purdue University, near Chicago, continued her excellent run of form by making it to the semi finals of the prestigious and elite Women’s Western Amateur in Illinois from July 19-24 where she went down to Australian Maddison Tolchard of Australia by 3&2. The Western Amateur is considered the 2nd most important amateur event in USA after the US Amateur and to make it to the semi finals is a first for any Indian girl.
15 year old Anika Varma, the other Indian in the field, also made it to the group of 32.
Talking about her week, Sifat added, “I had a very fun week in Chicago getting to play match play format after so long. Before heading for the tournament, my teammates and I often played against each other here on our home course at Purdue to learn how to better strategize ourselves in this type of format. I also made a few swing changes in the last couple of weeks so it was really nice to see the hard work finally paying off.”
In May, Sifat was named on the Dean’s List at Purdue University for her fourth consecutive semester while scoring a 3.5 GPA where she is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s in Organisational Leadership.
